It was a crazy week, and I'd actually consider it the opener of the real season (maybe because last week was just practice for the fantasy league?) This week actually started on Thursday night, but the big hits of Friday included Florida's surprising performance at LSU, Bama's season opener, Georgia and Arkansas, and Auburn and Kentucky.
No one expected Florida to get beat by LSU (but hey, that's why it's called an upset) but with two who should be more dependable falling on balance beam, it happened. Marissa King and Bridget Sloan both should have stayed on the apparatus.
Though once the door was open, LSU's incredible floor rotation took care of the rest. It's also good to see Rheagan Courville and Mincy Hall both topping the all-around. LSU is proving to be more of a contender than originally thought - even pulling out a strong bar rotation with Sarie Morrison's 9.9.
Not too many surprises at Arkansas meet hosting Georgia. Shayla is having a much better season than those past, and hopefully she keeps it up. Brittany Rogers is looking pretty good, and I can't wait to see her vault later in the season - so much power!
It's also fantastic to see Katherine Grable hitting the all-around like she should, although the GymDogs didn't put up any all-arounders. However, a disappointing bars and beam rotation gave the meet to Georgia.
Down at the some of the less hyped meets: Central Michigan topped New Hampshire at home, with UNH's Austyn Fobes falling in the AA to CMU's Becca Druien. NC State and Maryland ended in a tie at 195 with State's Diahannah Ham taking the all-around, including a 9.9 on vault. Pittsburgh fell to West Virginia, but Pitt's Lindsay Offut won the AA, earning one of the three 9.9's on floor awarded at the meet, another going to WVU's Alaska Richardson.
Iowa State edged out Kent State, and Henrietta Green was the only gymnast to compete all-around. UW Eau Claire beat UW La Crosse and Hamline, after both schools had difficult bar rotations. UW Oshkosh beat Winona State. Illinois State beat Lindenwood at home. Iowa overtook Ball State - though it was nice to see a less terrifying bar rotation from them.
And our last two meets took us out to the west coast. Sacramento State beat Seattle Pacific at home. Hornet Kalliah McCartney won the all-around with a 39.3, and Nicole Meiller earned a 9.9 on bars. Cal beat out UC Davis although both teams had devastating beam rotations. Cal's Alicia Asturias topped the AA with a 39.3.
Check out Part II (should be up soon!) for Bama's season opener, Auburn vs Kentucky, and OSU vs OSU.
